Somaliland Vice President and members of the government in Somaliland have bid farewell to 14 prisoners captured in Tukaraq clashes between Somaliland and Puntland State in Somalia.
The prisoners were captured following the clashes in January 2018 in Takuraq, 80 KM from the northwest of Garowe, the capital city to Puntland State. Somaliland and Puntland dispute the territorial border of the region, both claim that the Sool and Sanaag region as part of their territories. Unlike Puntland, Somaliland wants to break away from Somalia.
Recently, close to 500 soldiers and military commanders have defected from Somaliland in Sanaag. The troops say they were against the secession calls from Somaliland.
Puntland welcomed the defection of the troops from Somaliland in a colourful event in Balibusle village near Hingalol.
One of the defected soldiers who spoke to GM had said that ” they were not willing to attack civilian and oppress them.”
“If they want to join Somaliland and want to secede from Somalia, it should be their choices but not forcing them to do so,”
There were reported that the military in Erigavo ordered Somaliland troops in the region to move into Badhan town. But quickly troops commanders— the majority of them from the region— refused to take orders. A source close to the defected troops, says the commander was ordered to come to Erigavo before their defection.
” The defection come following concerns that there will be disciplinary action against the soldiers and their commanders.” the sources have told GM.
